About COFERdata.com

COFERdata.com is an independent, non-commercial reference site that visualizes the currency composition of official foreign exchange reserves held by central banks worldwide. Our goal is to make one of the most important datasets in international finance — the IMF's COFER statistics — easy to explore for students, journalists, researchers, and anyone curious about the global monetary system.

Data Source

The primary source is the IMF Currency Composition of Official Foreign Exchange Reserves (COFER) dataset, which aggregates confidential reports from 149 economies. The IMF publishes COFER quarterly, approximately three months after the end of each quarter. We retrieve the series through the DBnomics open data platform and refresh our cache daily; when the upstream feed lags behind the IMF's official release, we update the figures manually from the IMF data brief.

Methodology and Limitations

  • Global shares and amounts on the dashboard and currency pages reflect allocated reserves as reported in COFER, expressed in US dollar billions.
  • Country-level figures on the country pages are estimates. COFER reports are confidential at the country level, so individual-country allocations are derived from published central bank disclosures, national statistics, and known allocation patterns. They indicate scale and structure, not officially confirmed values.
  • Historical series in the charts may include interpolated estimates for periods where the complete official history is not available through our data feed. The latest quarter always reflects official IMF figures.
  • The "Other" bucket covers currencies outside the eight major reserve currencies as well as residual amounts.
